caused by infection in lungs or bloodstream or penetrating wounds
classic triad of meningitis
fever, headache, stiff neck
s/s of meningitis besides triad
n/v photophobia altered mental status skin rash petechia
positive kernig sign
resistance to leg extension
positive brudzinki sign
neck flexion causes hip/knee flexion
acute bacterial meningitis
most common form
acute viral meningits
milder form
tx of bacterial meningitis
aggressive antibiotic therapy
ceftriaxone, vancomycin
steroid therapy
prophylaxis: vaccine
enecephalitis
acute inflammation of brain
etiology of enecphalitis
viral
west nile
measles, chicken pox, mumps, herpes
clinical manifestations of enecphalitis
signs appear 2-3 days after infection
range from mild to coma
fever, headache, n/v, seizures
pharm for enecphalitis
acyclovir
brain abscesses
accumulation of pus within brain tissue
local or systemic infection
most common causes of brain abscesses
from ear, tooth, mastoid, sinus
clinical manifestations of brain abscesses
similar to enecephalitis
headache, fever, n/v
ICP
drowsiness, confusion, seizures
