Guidance Flashcards
What is visual guidance
The learner watches a model to form a mental image. This can be a demonstration, video, picture or guidance lines
What is verbal guidance
The teacher uses spoken instruction to tell the learner what to do
What is manual guidance
Hands on / physical support of the performer to place in correct position or guide through the correct movement pattern manipulating the learners body to try and develop kinesthesis
What is mechanical guidance
The learner uses equipment or apparatus to help performance. Supporting the body through the movement using apparatus to develop confidence
Advantages of visual guidance
Forms a mental picture
Increases understanding of movement requirements
Corrects errors
Motivates the learner
Good at cognitive stage
Disadvantages of visual guidance
Not effective if demonstration is poor
Demonstration loses impact if too complex ir static
To be effective demonstration must be supported by verbal guidance
No feedback so less effective at autonomous stage
Advantages of verbal guidance
Builds on knowledge gained by visual guidance
Helps to develop understanding of detail
Can focus on key / most relevant aspects
Corrects errors
Motivates the learner
Good at autonomous stage
Disadvantages of verbal guidance
Not effective if too much negative feedback or criticism is given
Not effective if too much information given(overload)
Incorrect or unclear info could be given
Some skills are too complex for verbal guidance alone e.g. somersault
Can be confusing in cognitive stage
Advantages of manual guidance
Corrects errors
Gives confidence / is good for dangerous skills
At autonomous stage helps to develop more complex skills
Gives a feeling of movement / kinesthesis and develops timing
Effective at cognitive stage
May motivate young people to pursue the sport
Disadvantages of manual guidance
Learner cannot correct error for themselves
Close proximity of the coach could be uncomfortable for learners
Ineffective if used for too ling / learner become over reliant
Can limit full kinaesthetic development
Learner must trust coach
Advantages of mechanical guidance
Corrects erros
Gives confidence / is good for dangerous skills
At autonomous stage helps to develop more complex skills
Gives a feeling of movement / kinesthesis and develops timing
Effective at cognitive stage
May motivate young people to pursue the sport
Disadvantages of mechanical guidane
Learner cannot correct error for themselves
May develop false confidence putting learner at risk
Ineffective if used for too ling / learner become over reliant
Can limit full kinaesthetic development
Learner must trust apparatus
