Q

procedure

A

body shape questionnaires and eating disorder Inventory-2 were given

assessment of height, shoulder width and weight were standardised

measured changes of weight before the disorder, 6 months before the study and at the time of the study

51 different opening were between 30-80cm, each opening was presented 4 times

2 conditions (1PP and 3PP)

experimenter (28, shoulder width was 38cm and stood 5.9m from the wall projections)

Q

results

A

AN had a significantly higher score on the body shape questionnaire

mean perceptual ratios were higher for the AN group, mean ratio for the AN group was 1.321 and for the controls it was 1.106

Q

give 3 points on the conclusion

A

AN significantly overestimated their own possibility in relation to the control group

AN made errors when judging their own possibility but did not make any errors when judging the passability of the experimenter

own body schema issues (patients have not adapted to their internal body image to take into account their new body size after developing the disorder)

Q

1 generalisability point

A

P- high generalisability

E-all from Lille, France/ mean age of 23.84

E- ethnocentric, cannot apply results to non-western cultures, not representative of all ages

Q

give 2 reliability points

A

P- high reliability

E- 30-80cm openings, opening was shown 4 times, experimenter stood 5.9 cm away from screen

E- standardised procedure, test for anomalies, consistency of findings of body image dsyfunction

P- high reliability

E- quantitative data gathered (1PP: mean ratio AN was 1.321 control: 1.506)

E- compare AN and control group easily

Q

1 application point

A

P- high application

E- CBT, cognitive restructing, change faulty thinking patterns, body image dsytortion

E- cognitive issues could be the root cause so it aims to try and reestablish positive schema when talking about yourself

Q

give 3 validity points

A

P- high validity

E- participants matched on age and education

E- control over participant variables which means comparisons of body image dystortion are more accurate

P- low ecological validity

E- completed in a lab and projections of doors can be unnatural

E- not representative of AN patients everyday setting

P- low validity

E- came from a clinic and many don’t like hospitalisation

E- demand characteristics are shown, reducing accuracy of results

Q

give 2 ethics points

A

P- low ethics

E- making an AN patient talk about their body is an uncomfortable topic as well as completing the body questionnaire

E- psychological harm, doesn’t follow the BPS guidelines

P- high ethics

E- got informed consent and parental consent

E- followed BPS guidelines
