Indications
Continuous menstruation or uterine bleeding that alternates between trickling and gushing of blood (very red, may contain dark-purple clots). Sensation of heat and irritability in the chest, abdominal pain, dark urine, a red tongue, and a rapid, wiry pulse.
Actions
Enriches the yin, clears heat, stops bleeding, and stabilizes the menses

Chief
guī băn: salty, sweet, cooling; tonifies yin essence and directs the fire downward
bái sháo: sour, bitter, cooling; preserves yin and nourishes blood
Deputies
bitter, cooling
huáng qín: drains heat from upper burner and blood to stop the bleeding
huáng băi: drains damp-heat from the lower burner
With chiefs, control fire (yang) by directing it downward, fortifying water (yin)
Assistants
xiāng fù: acrid; regulates qi and relieves Liver constraint; small amount - warming nature doesn’t add to the fire
chūn pí: bitter, astringent; binds up the blood and prevents an abandoned disorder from developing, which is otherwise likely with long-term blood loss
Envoy
wine: leads other substances into the blood, prevents astringent nature of sour ingredients from causing blood stasis
Cautions and Contraindications
Astringent in nature so contraindicated in patterns characterized by heat due to blood stasis.
Diagnostic Pattern
Yin deficiency and constraint of the Liver giving rise to heat, which disturbs the penetrating and conception vessels, causing the blood to become hot and move recklessly.
