A naevus is a mole - collection of melanocytes

A
Increase in size of cell

What is hyperplasia?
A
- Enlargement of tissue/organs due to increase reproduction rate of cells
- Can be initial stage in the development of cancer

What is Goitre?
A
Swelling of neck due to enlargement of thyroid
- Result of iodine deficiency
- Decreased synthesis of thyroid hormone

What is metaplasia?
A
Change from 1 DIFFERENTIATED tissue into ANOTHER
Acid reflux oesophagus: Squamous -> Columnar
Smokers: Ciliated columnar -> Squamous

What is dysplasia?
A
DISORDERED/ABNORMAL growth of tissue/organ
- Can occur in metaplastic tissue
- Mostly seen in epithelia
- Could be seen as PRE-cancer

What is neoplasia?
A
Formation of NEW tissue - Abnormal growth (Excessive)
- Includes benign & malignant tumours
- Persists even after stimulus removed
