what is the definition for urbanisation?
The increasing percentage of a country’s population living in towns and cities.
What is a megacity?
A city with more than 10 million people living in it.
What is rural to urban migration?
People moving from the countryside (rural) to towns and cities (urban)
Name some push and pull factors of migration?
lack of opportunities
soil erosion making farming difficult
rural = isolated
poor transport
more opportunities - jobs/ work/ healthcare
public transport
entertainments
safety
what is natural increase?
Where the birth rate is higher than the death rate. people living in cities tend to be younger (18-35) so will have more children.
Name some countries that have a high urbanisation rate
3.96 - 9.85
central africa, south east asia, south america
Name some countries that have a low urbanisation rate
-4.32 - 1.32
High developed western countries - uk, canada, australia, usa, germany, greenland
Name some high income countries and explain why people may move to these areas.
UK - 0.38 - 0.85% - you can still get jobs and have a good standard of living in rural and urban areas.
Name some low income countries and explain why people move to these areas.
vietnam - 3.96-9.85% - there are many manufacturing companies that acquire many jobs
describe the global distribution of megacities.
- mostly found near the coast ( mainly big cities_
- mainly found on the East (South East Asia) - beijing, manila, mumbai. = mixture of LIC’s and NEE’s
- Moscow is not coastal and does not fit the patter and so does America as it is an HIC.
