What is urbanisation?
The increasing percentage of a country’s population living in towns and cities. (over 50%)
What is a megacity?
A city with more than 10 million people living in it.
What is rural - urban migration?
People moving from the countryside to towns and cities. This is because of push and pull factors.
Push factors for rural - urban migration?
War
lack of opportunities
natural disasters
soil erosion making farming difficult
poor railways.
Pull factors for rural - urban migration?
More opportunities - education/work/medical
Family
safety
public transport are better
entertainments.
What is natural increase?
Where the birth rate is higher than the death rate. People in cities tend to be younger (18-35) so will therefore have more children.

Slow rate of urbanisation as it happend earlier i.e UK - Industrial revolution
Urbanisation in LIC’s
Fast rate due to economic growth in cities.
What are the Urban Trends in the world?
The higher rates of increasing population are Central Africa, South East Asia and South America.
Lower rates are highly developed western countries e.g UK, Canada, Australian,USA, Germany and Greenland.
Give some statistics for high income countries and reasons.
America - 0.85%-1.32%
Jobs
good standard of living in rural and urban areas.
Statistics for Low income countries and reasons.
Vietnam - 3.96% - 9.85%
Many manufacturing companies.
Describe the global distribution of megacities.
Megacities mostly found near the Coast and mainly found in the East. There is a mixture of LIC’s and NEE’s but Moscow is not coastal and does not fit the pattern and America is a HIC.
