Weberian Theory
More likely to be in poverty due to poor labour market situation
Individuals income depends on their labour market situation, the domestic role of women often leads them to having a poor situation as many need part time work, have career breaks to raise children and due this they have fewer skills and qualifications to offer
Most part time workers are women due to domestic commitments, this is lower paid than full time
EOC- on average women are paid 15% less than men

Poverty is the result of living in a patriarchal society
Men have most of the power in families and tend to be employed in better paid, high status jobs

Benston: women are exploited by capitalism and treated as a ‘reserve army of cheap labour’, keeps wages low

Family situations such as divorce can leave women in poverty
Also suffer from hidden poverty, family income is not equally shared, women spend less on their own needs
