What are the 6 needs shared by all groups and the community?

Define Adequate standard of living.
Provides protection and shelter, and a place for social and emotional needs to be experienced.
Define Health.
Is a specific need of many of these groups. Health needs are for both chronic and acute conditions.
Define Education.
includes both formal and informal education. the type and nature needed depend on the group and the circumstances.
Define Employment.
Meets many specific needs such as financial support, sense of identity and self-esteem; can be paid or voluntary; part-time or full time.
Define Safety and security.
People need to feel safe and secure in their home, in their environment and with friends, family and neighbours.
Define Sense of identity.
Who you are, is influenced by the roles you play in work, family, sport or social life. This may change if your circumstances change, such as becoming disabled, homeless or chronically ill.
What are the characteristics of Homeless people.
-Insecure lifestyle
-Temporary accommodation in refuges, shelters or moving between relatives and friends in abandoned houses or other buildings.
-Having little support or protection.
-Often victims of physical, sexual, emotional or drug abuse.
-Often involved in criminal activity.
-May have poor literacy skills and little education
-Mostly unemployed with few employment prospects.
-May have a history of domestic violence in the family home.
-58% male and 42% female
-8.5% of total homeless people are aboriginal and Torres strait Islanders.
-75% of homeless individuals have at least one mental disorder.
93% have experienced at least one extreme trauma in life.
Why people are homeless?
Homelessness is often a result of a number of complex issues which can include:
- The chronic shortage of affordable and available rental housing
- Domestic and family violence
- Poverty
- Financial crisis
- Long term unemployed
- Existing state care
- Exiting prison
- Severe overcrowding-housing crisis
- Poor physical or mental health
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Gambling
- Family and relationship breakdown
- Physical and/or sexual abuse
What are the specific needs of the homeless people?
Adequate standard of living, health, education, employment and safety and security.
Talk about the need adequate standard of living of the homeless people.
Basic needs (food, shelter, clothing) and shelter is a basic need. Depending on their level of homeless (tertiary, secondary and primary) could impact the level of support they receive, The facilities available are limited due to the cost associated. Not call can e catered for.
Talk about the need health of the homeless people.
Health is poor due to living conditions (particularly those who are primary home).
The cost of accessing services and the inability to gain private health insurance means long waiting lists in hospitals and doctors.

27% of the homeless are younger than 18. The education of children and young adults is significantly affected If they are homeless.

Some homeless do not have fixed address and so they can not receive government funding assistance.

Physical safety due to lack of shelter, poor health and possible violence from society and each other. Emotional security is slow due to lack of comfort, poor sense of identity, self-esteem and loneliness. Society they require encouragement, interaction with others (charities and organisations assist with this).
