Group Presentations Flashcards
What is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus?
Autoimmune disease where Body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue
What is going on with the lymphocytes in people with lupus?
B Cells produce antibodies which target self
Treg Cells are low in number and function impaired
What is Guillain-Barré syndrome?
Autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system
What is going on immunologically with Guillain-Barré syndrome?
Antibodies are attacking the axons of the peripheral nervous system
What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Autoimmune disease where T Cells target/kill Beta cells in the pancreas so insulin can’t be produced
What is Grave’s Disease?
Autoimmune disorder that ultimately causes
Hyperthyroidism
What is a pollen allergy?
A Type I Hypersensitivity, where immune system reacts to non-self/non-harmful pollen antigens.
What is the primary and secondary pollen allergic response?
● Primary response:
○ B cell release IgE antibody
● Secondary response:
○ Mast and basophil cells release histamine
What is Lyme Disease?
Disease transmitted by bacteria Borrellia borgdorferi. Causes neurologic and cardiac complications.
What are Xenografts?
transplant of any live cells, tissues, or
organs from a nonhuman animal source to a human recipient
What Three major factors determine whether a donor and a recipient are compatible?
blood type, tissue type, and cross-matching.
What is ADA deficiency?
Adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency Autosomal metabolic disorder that causes severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID)
What is the effect of ADA deficiency?
People affected with ADA deficiency lack almost all immune protection from bacteria, viruses, and fungi
Over time, it can cause chronic lung damage and malnutrition
What is leukemia?
Type of blood cancer found in your blood and bone marrow and is caused by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells
What are the types of leukemia?
- Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)
- Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)
- Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
- Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML)
