What occurs in the introduction step?
- get to know population (esp if new)
- set mood/environment to match group
- explain & set expectations
- explain purpose
- make goals
- outline of session
What occurs in the activity step?
activity: 1/3 of time (about 10-15 mins)
- leadership knowledge & skills
- know physical & mental capabilities of group
- adapt & grade activity (physical, mental, cognitive, sensor & perceptual abilities)
What occurs in the sharing step?
- share product/experience
- every has equal share time
- acknowledge can be nonverbal
Leader’s role- show empathy, encourage without pressure & acknowledge each person’s contribution
Why can sharing and processing bleed into each other?
Because processing is emotional part of the activity
What occurs in the processing step?
- share feelings of the exp (activity, leader, group members)
- express feelings (OT can help decipher feelings & interpret)
What occurs in the generalizing step?
Leader shares general principles of the activity→ what was in common/ disagreements & what energized the group
- should not he preplanned
- resemble OG goals
NOT A SUMMARY
What occurs in the application step?
- apply learn material & principle outside group
- “participation in life”
What occurs in the summary step?
Leader summarizes goals of group, content covered & process of group
- emphasize positive energy
- thank participants for coming
- reiterate general principles from generalizing step
- group verbalize what they learned and how they will apply it
goals don’t have to be met every session
What are some important factors in group?
Group Motivation
- building group confidence in leader by showing empathy, trust, vulnerabiltiy and contributing to grou
- encourage enthusiasm in group & individuals
- encourage interaction by supporting one another
Set limits to assume appropriate authority
- give everyone equal time
- limit inappropriate behavior
What are the group leadership styles?
Directive Leadership: OT is the director; allows participants to do as much as they want
- lower cognitive functional level group
Facilitative Leadership: Leader prepares to be challenged; participants are motivated by choices & guidance of leader
- adequate cognitive capacity & self awareness
Group Leadership as Advisor– self motivated, high functioning group
What is taken into consideration when forming a group?
- time
- place
- activity must be taken into consideration
What is conflict resolution?
arguing & avoiding are behaviors that occur
- compromise must be reached
