Group 7- Unit 1 Flashcards
What is the common name for group 7?
Halogens
What type of ions do group 7 form?
-1 charge
They gain one electron
How do the ions change their name?
Halogens become Halides
Fluorine- Fluoride
Chlorine- Chloride
Bromine- Bromide
Why are Chlorine, Fluorine and Bromine in group 7?
They all have 7 electrons in their outer shell
What happens to the size of the atoms down group 7?
They get bigger
By one energy level
What happens the reactivity of the halogens down group 7?
They get less reactive
Why does the reactivity change down group 7?
The outer electrons
Are further away from the nucleus
So it is harder to attract an electron
What does displacement mean?
When a more reactive substances
Takes the place of a less reactive susbtance
Sodium Chloride + Bromine ->
React or not?
No reaction
Bromine is less reactive than Chlorine
Sodium Bromide + Chlorine ->
React or not?
Sodium Chloride + Bromine
Chlorine is more reactive than Bromine
Sodium Iodide + Fluorine ->
React or not?
Sodium Fluoride + Iodine
Fluorine is more reactive that Iodine
