Group 1- Unit 1 Flashcards
Why are Sodium, Lithium and Potassium in group 1?
They all have one electron in their outer shell
What happens to the size of the atom at you go down group 1?
They get bigger
By one shell
each row
What happens to the outer electron as you go down group 1?
It gets further away
From the nucleus
What are the names of the first 3 group 1 elements?
Lithium, Sodium and Potassium
What happens to the reactivity of group 1 metals down the group?
They get more reactive
Which does the reactivity change down group 1?
The outer electron
is further away from the nucleus
So it is more likely to be lost
Why are group 1 called the alkali metals?
They form Metal Hydroxides
When they react with water
Hydroxide are alkali
What gas is formed when alkali metals react with water?
Hydrogen
What is the test for hydrogen?
Goes pop with a lighted splint
How do you know the reactivity of group 1 metals increases?
More gas produced
Small ‘pop’ or explosion
Potassium gives a lilac flame
