Group 7 - Halogens Flashcards
What colour is fluorine gas?
Pale yellow
What colour is chlorine gas?
Yellow-green
What colour is liquid bromine?
Red-brown
What colour is solid iodine?
Grey
What happens to group 7 elements when added to water?
They dissolve
What colour is chlorine solution?
Pale green/colourless
What colour is bromine solution?
Orange
What colour is iodine solution?
Dark orange
What happens when group 7 elements are placed in a non polar solvent (eg. Cyclohexane)
They dissolve
Give an example of a non polar solvent
Cyclohexane
What colour is chlorine in cyclohexane?
Colourless
What colour is bromine in cyclohexane?
Orange
What colour is iodine in cyclohexane?
Purple
What happens to group 7’s reactivity as you go down the group?
It decreases
Why does reactivity of the halogens decrease down the group?
- larger atomic radius
- outer electrons feel less force from the nucleus
- more shielding from inner shells
- harder to gain an electron
