Group 7 (halogens) Flashcards
where are halogens found
group 7
what are halogens
All of them are non-metals with coloured vapours
properties of fluorine
very reactive, poisonous yellow gas
properties of chlorine
fairly reactive, poisonous dense green gas
properties of bromine
dense, poisonous, red-brown volatile liquid
properties of iodine
dark grey crystalline solid or a purple vapour
what happens as you go down group 7
become less reactive - it is harder to gain an extra electron, because the outer shells further from the nucleus.
Have higher melting and boiling points
have higher relative atomic masses
how many electrons are on their outer shell
all have seven electrons on their outer shell.
how can atoms share electrons
via covalent bonding with other non-metals so as to achieve a full outer shell
what happens when halogens react with metals
form 1-ions called halides
