Group 1 (alkali metals) Flashcards
what groups are alkali metals in
1
how many electrons do alkali metals have on the outer shell
one electron - making them very reactive and gives them similar properties
what are the properties of alkali metals
soft metals, high thermal and electrical conductivity, ductile and malleable
what are the trends as you go down group 1
increasing reactivity- outer shell is more easily lost as the attraction between the nucleus and electron decreases because the electron is further away from the nucleus as you go down group 1.
lower melting and boiling point.
Higher relative atomic mass
what happens when alkali metals react with chlorine
react vigorously when heated in chlorine gas to form white salts
what happens when alkali metals react with water
react vigorously producing hydrogen.
They also form hydroxides that dissolve in water to give alkaline solutions.
what happens when alkali metals react with oxygen
form a metal oxide
e.g: lithium oxide
