GROUP 3 - PLASTICS Flashcards
Synthetic or semi-synthetic material that has polymers as main ingredient
Plastic
Standard Practice for Coding Plastics Manufactured Articles for Resin Identification (ASTM)
ASTM D7611/D7611 M - 21
It identifies plastic resin that is used

Give example of them:
Water Bottle
Plastic Spray container (quite thick plastic)
Pipes
Cellophane
Food containers
Styrocup
Water Gallon (The blue one), plastic tumbler
Types of PVC Pipes:
A rigid PVC
Unplasticized PVC (PVC-U)
Types of PVC Pipes:
Can withstand wider range of temperature
Chlorinated PVC (C-PVC)
Types of PVC Pipes:
Can resist corrosion
Preserve water quality
A result of the production process that turns PVC-U into layered structure
Molecular Oriented PVC (PVC-O)
Types of PVC Pipes:
Family of thermoplastic alloys in addition of modifying agents to PVC
Modified PVC (PVC-M/PVC-Hi)

This standard specifies the requirements for rigid PVC and CPVC compounds used for the manufacture of pipes and fittings.
ASTM D1784-20: Standard Specification for Rigid Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Compounds and Chlorinated Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (CPVC) Compounds
This standard covers PVC pressure-rated pipes with a standardized dimension ratio (SDR) and pressure rating for water supply and distribution, irrigation, and other applications.
ASTM D2241-20: Standard Specification for Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Pressure-Rated Pipe (SDR Series)
This standard covers PVC pipes and fittings used for non-pressure drainage and vent systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
ASTM D2665-20: Standard Specification for Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Plastic Drain, Waste, and Vent Pipe and Fittings
Formed by random co-polymerization of propensity monomer and a small amount of ethylene monomer under the action of heat, pressure and catalyst.
Polypropylene Random Copolymer
(PPR PIPE)
PVC Connection Methodology:
simplest way to connect PVC pipe. To do this, simply push your PVC pipe into your fitting.
Dry Fitting
PVC Connection Methodology:
Use an appropriate drill bit to make a pilot in your PVC and fitting, then run a self-tapping screw into this pilot hole. The screw will hold everything together.
Fasteners
PVC Connection Methodology:
To do this, use a PVC cleaner, rough up the connecting surfaces with sandpaper, apply the glue to one surface, then fit pipe to fitting.
Silicone & Glue
PVC Connection Methodology:
use strong steel band clamps to hold the rubber tight around your PVC pipe.
Flex Couplings
PVC Connection Methodology:
Apply the solvent, then insert your PVC pipe into the fitting. Turn the pipe slightly, then hold it inside the fitting for at least 15 seconds to prevent it from backing out.
PVC Solvents/Cements
HDPE Connection Methodology:
The process involves the joining of two flat surfaces against each other. By flat surface, in HDPE pipes, it means the flat facing surfaces at the two ends of the pipe joined together utilizing high temperature and extreme pressure.
Butt Welding
HDPE Connection Methodology:
Welding is done with heating resistors inside the fusion fitting. Once the pipes are placed in the Ef fittings, the ends of the welding machine are connected to the resistors of the ef fitting and heating them.

PPR Connection Methodology:
A machine used for connecting PPR Pipes
PPR Fusion Machine
It is a type of hose that is corrugated, is moisture-resistant and flame retardant. Can be bent by hand and not threaded due to its corrugated shape.
PVC Corrugated Electrical Flexible Hose
Plastic Roofs:
is a transparent thermoplastic with carbonate functional groups.
Polycarbonate (PC)
Plastic Roofs:
are highly adaptable roofing sheets which offer UV protection and are highly durable
Acrylic roofing sheets
Plastic Roofs:
are a bit for cushioning. They have similar properties like the other sheets but are known for their good insulating properties.
Polystyrene sheets
What does HIPS means
High impact polystyrene
