Group 3 Flashcards
what does surface area affect a cell
The larger a cell is, the smaller the surface area available for diffusion. Smaller cells have a much greater surface area to volume ratio allowing material to diffuse throughout the entire volume of the cell quickly and efficiently.
Structure and function of the plasma membrane
to protect the cell from its surroundings. Composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, the plasma membrane is selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules
what are the 4 Modes of transport of soluble substances across the plasma membrane
simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis and active transport
define simple diffusion
the process in which a substance moves through a semipermeable membrane or in a solution without any help from transport proteins. high to low
define facilitated diffusion
transport of substances across a biological membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration with the help of a transport molecule.
define osmosis
the process of water moving to balance out concentration. Does not need energy
define active transport
movement of molecules from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration. low to high
