Group 2 Alkaline Earth Metals Flashcards
What happens to the solubility of Groups 2 ions bonded to -1 charge ions (ionic bond)?
As you go down group 2, ions of the group 2 element bonded to -1 charge ions will increase in solubility
What is name for compounds with low solubility?
Sparingly soluble
What happens to the solubility of Groups 2 ions bonded to -2 charge ions (ionic bond)?
As you go down group 2 , ions of the group 2 element bonded to -1 charge ions will decrease in solubility
What is the test for sulfate ions?
- Firstly add HCL to a solution containing
sulfate ions
remove impurities (sulfites and carbonates) - Secondly add Barium chloride to solution
- White precipitate forms displaying
presence of sulfate ions
Why is it that during the test for sulfate ions the solution containing sulfate ions is purified with HCL?
This is done to remove impurities (sulfites and carbonates) as they also produce a white precipitate
What is a use all group 2 compounds have?
To neutralise acids (as they are alkaline)
Use of Calcium Hydroxide
Calcium hydroxide is used in agriculture to neutralise acid soils
Use of Magnesium Hydroxide?
- Magnesium hydroxide is used to in indigestion tablets (heartburn tablets) to neutralise excess stomach acid
Special Use of Barium Sulfate?
A Barium meal is taken by a patient and as the barium sulfate coats the tissues they can be seen in an x-ray
x-rays pass straight through soft tissue therefore cannot be seen in an x-ray but Barium sulfate is opaque to x-rays therefore displaying in an x-ray.
Use of magnesium
In the extraction of titanium, magnesium reduces titanium chloride
Use of calcium oxide and calcium carbonate?
They are mixed with water to make a slurry (alkali+water) and sprayed in industrial tubes to remove sulfur dioxide
Equation for removal of sulfur dioxide by slurry (Wet scrubbing)
CaO+2H20+SO2——–>CaSO3+2H2O
CaCO3+2H2O+SO2——->CaSO3+2H2O+CO2
What is a waste product for removal of sulfur dioxide by slurry?
Calcium sulfites
