Group 1 - the alkali metals Flashcards
Group one elements have how many electrons in the outer shell
They have 1 electron in the outer shell
Group one elements are
A.colourless gases
B.reactive low density metals
C.coloured metals
They are reactive , low density , soft metals
What is the name of group one metals
They are the alkali metals
Going down the group alkali metals get increasing or decreasing reactivity ?
As you go down the group the reactivity INCREASES because as there are more shells the outer electron is further away from the positive nucleus- this means that the forces of attraction between the nucleus and the electron decreases and therefore making it easier to LOSE the outer electron so it’s MORE reactive
What charge does an alkali metal make ?
Alkali metals make 1+ POSITIVE ions because one electron is being lost and an electron has a negative charge and when a negative charge is lost that means there’s more positive charge
They form what with non metals
A. Ions
B.ionic compounds
C.isotopes
It’s so easy for alkali metals to lose the outer electron so they only react to form ionic compounds, these compounds are usually white solids that dissolve in water to form ionic compounds
When alkali metals react with water they form ??
EG for sodium
Sodium hydroxide+ hydrogen
When alkali metals react with chlorine they form ??
Sodium EG
Sodium chloride
Reaction with oxygen
They can react to form a metal oxide but sodium forms sodium oxide mainly but also makes sodium peroxide
Potassium makes potassium peroxide and potassium superoxide
Does the alkali metals have a higher or lower melting point going down the group
They have lower melting and boiling points
Do they have lower or higher relative atomic mass going down
Higher relative atomic mass going down
Properties of alkali metals
Shiny , soft , silvery , reactive , low density high thermal and electric conductivity
Why are alkali metals called alkali metals
Because when they react with water they leave an alkaline solution
Does the density increase going down
YES
But however does their softness increase
Yes
