Exam Questions Flashcards
Describe an atom fully (6 marks)
An atom consists of 3 subatomic particles - protons, electrons and neutrons . An atom has an overall charge of 0 because protons have a positive charge , electrons have a negative charge and neutrons have no charge. In the centre of the atom there is a nucleus that consists of neutrons and protons . There is the same amount of protons and electrons. Most of the mass of an atom is concentrated into the nucleus. The nucleus has a positive charge. Around the nucleus are electrons which are configured into shells. The nucleus is very small compared to the size of an atom
Similarities and differences of lithium and sodium’s reaction with water
Similarities: floats , fizzes , bubbles , dissolves , leaves alkaline solution in water , produces hydrogen in the sodium hydroxide + hydrogen
Differences
Sodium has a more vigorous reaction and sodium will light on fire (yellow flame )
Compare chemical and physical properties of transition elements and the alkali metals
Group 1 alkali metals
Low density , soft , high reactivity, low melting and boiling points, only forms 1+ ions , can’t be used as a catalyst but transition metals can . Has one outer electron
Transition metals
Hard strong , high melting and boiling points, high density, not reactive , catalysts (increases the rate of reaction without being used up itself
When metals react with non metals they form
Ions
Compounds formed by only non metals consist of ?
Molecules
