Group 1 - Periodic Table Flashcards
What are the group 1 elements properties?
All have one electron on outer shell - very reactive
All reactive soft metals
All low density
How do the properties change as you go down group 1?
Reactivity increases
Melting and boiling point decreases
Relative atomic mass increases
What is the group 1 elements called?
Alkali metals
What type of compounds do they form with non metals?
Ionic
How do the alkali metals react with water?
Vigorous reaction, produces metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas
Metal hydroxides are compounds that dissolve in water
More reactive, the more violent reactions.
Lithium, sodium and potassium float and move around the surface, fizzing furiously
The reaction with potassium lights hydrogen on fire.
Alkali metals reaction with chlorine
React vigorously when heated in chlorine gas
Form white salts called metal chlorides
As you g9 down the group, reactions more vigorous
Alkali metals reaction with oxygen
Can react to form metal oxide, which differ depending on group 1 metal
Group 1 metals are shiny but when react with oxygen they turn a dull grey as layer of metal oxide formed on surface.
