Group 1 Flashcards
What are group 1 metals known as
Alkali metals
What do they have that makes them very reactive
One electron in the outer shell
What is the trend going down the group and why
Increasing reactivity- the outer electron is further away from the attraction of the nucleus
Lower melting and boiling points
Higher relative atomic mass
What do alkali metals form
1+ ions
What do they react to form
Ionic compounds
What is the reaction with water
Hydrogen gas and sodium hydroxide
They react vigorously
The more lower down the group, the more violent
Lithium sodium and potassium float and moved around, fixing
What is the reaction with chlorine
Produces a salt
React vigorously when heated in chlorine gas to form white salts called metal chlorides
As you go down, reactivity increase so reaction gets more vigorous
What is the reaction with oxygen
Form a metal oxide
Lithium oxide
Sodium oxide, sodium peroxide
Potassium peroxide, potassium superoxide
What is the symbol for hydroxide
OH
