group 1 Flashcards
what are group 1?
Group 1 are the alkali metals.
have many electrons do all group 1 elements have in their outer shell?
All group 1 atoms have 1 electron in their outer energy level.
are group 1 metals reactive?
Group 1 metals are very reactive.
what happens when group 1 metals react?
When they react they lose their outer electron to form a full outer energy level and become stable.
why are group 1 metals stored in oil?
Group 1 metals are stored in oil to stop the oxidising.
what type of density do group 1 have? what does this mean?
They have low densities and float in water.
what happens when group 1 react with water?
Group 1 metals react vigorously with water producing an alkaline solution of the metal hydroxide plus hydrogen gas.
what do group 1 metals react with halogen to produce?
Group 1 metals react with halogen to produce metal halides which are white soluble solids.
what happens to the reactivity as you go down group 1?
The reactivity of group 1 increases as you go down the group.
