Group 0 (Noble gases) & Transition elements Flashcards
1
Q
Properties of noble gases
A
- non metals
- monatomic
- colourless gases @ room temp
- low mp & bp
- insoluble in water
- unreactive
2
Q
Why are noble gases unreactive?
A
- full electronic structures
- do not lose, gain or share electrons
- rarely react to form compounds
3
Q
Uses of noble gases
A
Helium: filling weather/ad balloons
Argon: fill tungsten bulbs (inert atmosphere prevents oxidation of filament)
Neon: lights
Xenon: Vehicle headlamps
Argon: inert atmoshphere for certain process ie. welding stainless steel
4
Q
Transition elements
A
- block of metals btwn Groups II and III
- aka transition metals
5
Q
Properties of transition metals
A
- high mp and bp
- high densities
- variable oxidation states
- form coloured compounds
- t. metals and their compounds are good catalysts
6
Q
Form coloured compounds
A
- Aqueous iron (III) chloride: Yellow
- Aq iron (II) chloride: Green
7
Q
Good catalysts
A
- iron (manufacture of ammonia)
- nickel (manufacture of margarine from veg oil)
- used in many industrial processes
