Ground Work Flashcards
1
Q
Getting Up
A
- Assume limited space between you & your attacker
- Sit up and put one hand on the ground / opposite foot on the ground (other foot should be ready to kick and other hand up guarding face)
- lift hips off the ground and swing kicking foot & hips back diagonally … reach foot farther back behind you
- Stand up and move back creating more space.
MISTAKES
- Putting base foot in front of other leg
- swinging hips straight back instead of diagonally
- putting foot down right beneath the body could cause loss of balance.
2
Q
Front kick (from the ground)
A
- Kick is usually made from back position
- STOMP foot out, striking with the heel
- drive your hips up and into the kick
* At the moment of contact only your base foot, shoulders, and elbows should be touching the ground. - Recoil immediately ready to kick again.
* Most kicks aim for shin or the knee
MISTAKES
- leaves hips on the floor (kick will lack power)
- kicks but does not recoil
3
Q
Back position movement on the ground
A
- Always keep you feet between you and the attacker.
- Use your planted foot to turn and stop
- keep the foot closest to the attacker chambered
- If the attacker is farther away you can use your hands to help turn.
MISTAKES
1. letting your leg fall while turning (will not be ready to kick quickly) … keep knee bent and chambered at all times.
4
Q
Round kick from the ground
A
- used when attacker tries to get around your guard
- like standing round kick, strike with shin
- for added power, make slight scissor motion w/ hips rolling … bottom one underneath and top hip over.
- chop slightly downward kicking, aiming for attackers knees
- Base leg will be stronger
- recover by pulling bottom knee up and turning both feet towards the attacker
MISTAKES
1. don’t scissor hips (creates slower kick)
5
Q
Side kick from Ground
A
- Coming from the side, it is the same STOMP as the front kick
- use your base arm to push off, to generate more power
- kick delivered to knees or shins
- recoil immediately
6
Q
Back Position (Ground)
A
- Base foot close to your butt
- Other knee bent up and to your chest
- hips off ground
- head off the ground, hands up & elbows in
- your chambered foot should be flexed
- keep as little surface area as possible on the ground (less friction)
MISTAKES:
- Knee not chambered back (meaning you aren’t ready to kick)
- Hips are on the ground (reduces mobility and decreases the power of a kick)
7
Q
Side position movement
A
- if attacker moves to your live side spin to follow
2. if attacker moves to your dead side, flip over to switch ground position
