ground tissue system Flashcards
1
Q
purpose of parenchyma
A
thin walled, living cells, most abundant plant cell; involved in photosynthesis –> filler part of plant
2
Q
types of parenchyma cells
A
palisade - elongated, upper part of leaf tissue, more chloroplasts
spongy - round (ish) shape, loose, found at base/underside of leaf
3
Q
purpose of collenchyma
A
variably thick-walled, supports growing stems, found under mid-vein (where vascular tissue runs), needs extra support
ex. strings of celery are collenchyma cells
4
Q
purpose of sclerenchyma
A
very thick walls containing lignin; support, strength
5
Q
types of sclerenchyma cells
A
fiber
sclerid - embedded or surrounded by parenchyma, which provides support
