dermal tissue system Flashcards
purpose of epidermis tissue
primary growth: protects plant from sun, water, pests, outermost layer
cuticle
epicuticular wax (waxy coating)
thickness depends on sun and shade
plants adapt based on conditions of sun and water
guard cells
regulate stomata, which control the movement of gases and water vapor
trichomes
protection and absorption of water and minerals, fuzziness on leaves (hairs) –> can help capture insects
unicellular, multicellular, glandular (secretes a substance)
purpose of periderm tissue
secondary growth: beneath epidermis, deeper in bark; replaces epidermis as protective tissue in roots and stems
cork cells
form protective/water resistant material in periderm
cork cambium cells (phellogen)
produces cork cells
phelloderm
thin layer of tissue between periderm layers
