Gross structures & CSF Flashcards
What is the alternative name for the forebrain?
Prosencephalon
What are the components of the forebrain?
- Telencephalon:
- Cerebral cortex
- Basal ganglia - Diencephalon:
- Thalamus
- Hypothalamus
What are the components of the hindbrain?
- Medulla
- Pons
- Cerebellum
What are the components of the brainstem?
- Medulla
- Pons
- Midbrain
What is the alternative name for the midbrain?
Mesencephalon
What is the alternative name for the hindbrain?
Rhombencephalon
What are the constant sulci present in the cerebral cortex?
- Longitudinal sulcus (between 2 hemispheres)
- Central sulcus (between frontal and parietal lobes)
- Lateral/Sylvian sulcus (between temporal and frontal/parietal lobes)
- Parieto-occipital sulcus (between parietal and occipital lobes, on medial surface)
How are the lobes named?
After the bones of the skull they are located beneath.
What is significant about arrangement of grey matter and white matter in the brain compared to spinal cord?
Grey matter on the outside in brain but inside in spine (apart from the deep nuclei).
What are the major cortices in the cerebral cortex?
- Primary motor cortex: Anterior to central sulcus.
- Primary somatosensory cortex: Posterior to central sulcus.
- Primary visual cortex: On occipital pole (especially in calcarine sulcus).
- Primary auditory cortex: Lateral temporal lobe (beneath lateral sulcus).
- Primary olfactory cortex: Medial temporal lobe.
What are the functions of glial cells?
- Supports neurone
- Produces myelin
- Removes debris from injured cells
- Take up neurotransmitters
- Guides axons in development
- Regulates synaptic properties
- Forms BBB
Where is pain represented?
- Primary somatosensory cortex
- Insula
- Anterior cingulate cortex
What is the ventricular system of the brain?
Lateral ventricles (2) → Inter-ventricular foraman (of Munro) → 3rd ventricle (1) → cerebral aqueduct → 4th ventricle (1) → central canal of spinal cord (or → foramina of Magendie & Luschka → subarachnoid space)
What are the horns of the lateral ventricles?
- Anterior horn
- Posterior horn
- Inferior horn
What are the important cisterns?
- Cisterna magna: Between medulla and cerebrellum.
- Lumbar cistern: Inferior to conus medullaris (L1).
What are the locations of the coroid plexuses?
All ventricles
What is the course of CSF?
Blood → Choroid plexus → Ventricles → Subarachnoid space → Arachnoid villi → Venous sinuses → Blood
What are the main sources of arterial supply to the brain?
- Internal carotid artery (ICA, anterior cerebral circulation)
- Vertebral arteries (posterior cerebral circulation)
What are the branches of the ICA?
- Anterior cerebral artery (ACA)
- Middle cerebral artery (MCA)
What does the ACA supply?
- Frontal lobe
- Medial aspects of parietal/occipital lobe
- Medial aspects of motor/somatosensory cortex supplying lower limbs.

What does the MCA supply?
- Basal ganglia
- White matter
- Lateral motor/somatosensory cortex supplying the upper limbs/head and neck
- Internal capsule

What are the branches of the vertebral artery?
- Posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA)
- Anterior spinal artery
What are the branches of the basilar artery?
- Posterior cerebral artery (PCA)
- Anterior infereior cerebellar artery (AICA)
- Superior cerebellar artery
- Pontine arteries
What does the PCA supply?
- Occipital lobe
- Infero-posterior surface of temporal lobe
