Basal ganglia Flashcards
What are the components of the striatum?
- Caudate nucleus
- Putamen
What are the components of the basal ganglia?
- Putamen
- Caudate nucleus
- Globus pallidus
What are the structures functionally associated with the basla ganglia?
- Thalamus + subthalamic nucleus (nuclei of diencephalon)
- Substantia nigra (nucleus of midbrain)
What is the structure of the caudate nucleus?
“Tadpole-shaped” with head, body and tail
What are the relations of the caudate nucleus to the lateral venticles?
- Head of caudate = Lateral walls of anterior horn of LV
- Body of caudate = Lateral walls of middle part of LV
- Tail of caudate = Roof of posterior horn of LV
What happens to the caudate nucleus and putamen in ventral aspects of the brain?
Joins together to form ventral stritum, in which the nucleus accumbens is located.
What is the structure of the globus pallidus?
- External segment
- Internal segment
What structures do the internal segment of globus pallidus project into?
- Motor areas of the thalamus:
1. Ventro-lateral thalamus
2. Ventro-anterior thalamus - Medial nucleus of the thalamus
What structures do the external segment of the globus pallidus project into?
Subthalamic nucleus
Which parts of the brain do the caudate nucleus receive projections from primarily?
Prefrontal cortex
Which parts of the brain do the putamen receive projections from primarily?
Sensorimotor cortex
What are the relations of the putamen?
Medial to the insula and lateral to the internal capsule
What are the types of fibres found in the internal capsule?
- Efferent:
1. Corticobulbar fibres
2. Corticospinal fibres
3. Corticopontine fibres - Afferent: Thalamocortical fibres
What are the origins of the corticospinal/corticobulbar tracts?
Motor cortex
What are the functions of the corticospinal tract?
Projects into spinal cord and mediates voluntary movements of the muscles of the body.
