Gross structure of NS Flashcards
Give an overview of the anatomical divisions of the CNS
What are the divisions of the cerebral hemispheres?
- frontal lobe
- parietal lobe
- occipital lobe
- temporal lobe
What do the cerebral hemispheres consist of?
Cerebral cortex, basal nuclei, lateral ventricle, corpus callosum, internal capsule
What is found in the diencephalon?
Thalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland, 3rd ventricle, interthalamic adhesion (connects ventricle to thalamus)
What structures are found in the mesencephalon?
Mesencephalic aqueduct (csf, connects 3rd to 4th ventricle), tectum, colliculi, crus cerebri
What structures are found in the metencephalon?
Cerebellum (surface is partitioned into folia and sulci) and pons
What are the functional divisions of the brain?
Forebrain, cerebellum and brainstem
Which arteries supply the brain?
- Rostal cerebral artery
- Middle cerebral artery
- Caudal cerebral artery
- Rostral cerebellar artery
- Caudal cerebellar artery
1-4 arise from circle of willis
5 arises from basilar artery
What is the circle of willis?
An elongated vascular ring at the base of the brain below the hypothalamus surrounding the infubdibular stalk of the pituitary. Function = maintain constant blood pressure in the end arteries
What is the rete mirabile?
Function in thermoregulation. Heat exchange between warm blood from body (rete blood0 and cooler venous drainage from nasal mucosa (cavernous sinus)
