Gross structure of diencephalon Flashcards
1
Q
What is diencephalon
A
- Paired structure.
- Forms the central core of the cerebrum.
- Located between the midbrain & the cerebral hemisphere.
- Encloses the cavity of the 3rd ventricle.
- On the medial surface, the diencephalon is subdivided, by hypothalamic sulcus into:
-Dorsal part
-Ventral part
2
Q
Relation in diencephalon
A
- Dorsal: Lateral ventricle
- Ventral: Exposed on the base of the brain
- Lateral: Internal capsule
- Medial: 3rd ventricle
3
Q
Parts of diencephalon and its functions
A
- Epithalamus: It is associated with circadian rhythm.
- Thalamus: It receives all sensory information, plays a role in voluntary motor activity and controls mood, emotion, sexual behaviour and memory.
- Subthalamus: It is associated with basal ganglia (functionally).
- Hypothalamus: It controls blood pressure and electrolyte, regulate body temperature, energy metabolism, reproduction functions and stress responses.
