Functional area of cerebral cortex Flashcards

1
Q

Functional areas of cerebral cortex

A

Primary areas have direct connections with specific group of muscles for causing discrete muscle movements or detects specific sensations like visual, auditory, somatic.
Secondary areas provides pattern to the motor activity or make sense out of the function of the primary areas

Q

Functional areas of Frontal lobe

A
  1. Primary motor area occupies precentral gyrus and controls voluntary movement of opposite side of body
  2. Secondary motor area occupies anterior part of precentral gyrus and refines movement of primary motor area to perform specific task
  3. Supplementary motor area is located in medial frontal gyrus and it complements primary motor area
  4. Prefrontal cortex is located in anterior part of superior, middle and inferior frontal gyrus and it influences the personality.
  5. Frontal eye field occupies middle frontal gyrus and it controls the voluntary conjugate movement of eye.
  6. Motor speech area of Broca occupies inferior frontal gyrus and it brings about formation of words.

Q

Functional areas of parietal lobe

A
  1. Primary somesthetic area occupies postcentral gyrus and it receives sensory input from opposite side of body.
  2. Secondary somesthetic area is in lowest part of precentral gyrus and it interprets sensory input from PSA and is correlated with past memory and makes sense out of it.
  3. somesthetic association area occupies superior parietal lobule and it connects different sensory areas.

Q

Functional areas of Occipital lobe

A
  1. Primary visual area surrounds calcarine sulcus and it receives visual impulse.
  2. Secondary visual area surrounds PVA and interprets visual impulse.
  3. Occipital eye field is involved in conjugate involuntary movement of eyes.

Q

Functional areas of temporal lobe

A
  1. Primary auditory area occupies superior temporal gyrus and it receives auditory information.
  2. Secondary auditory area surrounds PAA and it interprets auditory information
  3. Sensory speech area of Wernicke is located in posterior part of superior temporal gyrus and inferior part of parietal lobe and it permits the understanding of written and spoken language.
