Basic definitions Flashcards
Tract vs. Nerve
Bundle of nerve fibers within the CNS which have same origin and destination is called a
tract
Bundle of nerve fibers within the peripheral nervous system is called a nerve
White matter vs Grey matter
Grey matter is composed of cell bodies and unmyelinated fibers.
White matter is composed of myelinated fibers.
Nucleus vs Ganglion
Group of cell bodies within the CNS is called a nucleus
Group of cell bodies outside the CNS is called a Ganglion
Afferent fibers vs efferent fibers
Fibers which carry impulses towards the CNS are afferent fibers.
Fibers which carry impulses away from the CNS are efferent fibers.
Ipsilateral vs contralateral
Ipsilateral means same side
Contralateral means opposite side
Synapse
The junction between the two neurons is called synapse.
Pre- synaptic neuron & post-synaptic
neuron
The neuron before the synapse is called pre synaptic neuron
The neuron after the synapse is called post synaptic neuron
Decussation
The point where nerve fibers cross from one side to other side
