Define the areas of the NECK
The neck extends from the base of the skull and inferior
border of the mandible to the first rib

Define:
- Collum
- Nuchae
- Cervix
Collum = “Collar” = Neck
Nuchae = Neck~ posterior
Cervix = Neck
Describe the Tlhyroid Cartilage
- Cartilage of the Larynx
- Laryngeal prominence = aka “Adam’s Apple”
- Is at C4-5 vertebral level
Describe the Hyoid Bone
- Site of attachment for many anterior neck muscles and some muscles of the tongue
- Consist of a Body, Greater and Lesser cornua
- At C3 vertebral level
Describe the Cricoid Cartilage
- Cartilage of the Larynx
- At C6 vertebral level
Describe the Tracheal Cartilages
-The Trachea begins below C6 vertebral level
Describe the Clavicle
Anterior landmark of the neck area
Describe the Jugular or Suprasternal Notch
- The superior border of the manubrium
- is an anterior bony feature of the neck
Describe the Mandible and what it consists of
-The mandible aka the lower jawbone
-Mentum of the mandible= chin
- Inferior border of the mandible= the bottom edge of the jawline
- Angle of the mandible= the posterior angle of the jaw
- Ramus of the mandible= the superior lateral part of jaw, superior to the angle of the mandible, covered by teh Masseter m.
Describe the density of the skin on the neck and the nerves that innervate it.
Define Dermatomes
- Skin in the neck is THIN
- The neck is innervated by C2,3,4 spinal nerves and 2/3 of the anterior face in innervated by the Trigeminal Nerve (V)
Dermatomes-are the an area of the skin that is innervated by a specific nerve element or nevrve segment
Is the superficial fascia of the neck thick or thin and what muscle does it contain?
- Usually thin
- Platysma m.
