Grief
Response to having lost another through death.
Bereavement
The processing and resolution of grief.
Mourning
Psychological responses during grief?
-Anger, denial, depression
Occurs when something or someone of value is rendered inaccessible or drastically changed.
Loss
Loss that is identified and recognized by others. Is socially acceptable. Ex. loss of spouse
Actual Loss
Occurs when an individual knows a loss is coming.
Anticipatory Loss
Felt by an individual but cannot be verified as a loss from outside. Ex: loss of control or self-esteem.
Perceived Loss
Grief that is experienced before the event occurs.
Anticipatory grief
When person cannot acknowledge their loss to others, typically when loss is not one socially recognized. (ambiguous loss) Ex. Loss of partner in unrecognized relationship, aborted or miscarried child, suicide, loss of pet.
Disenfranchised grief
Unable to process their grief to a point of resolution. Dx at 6+ months after loss. Dx: grief has not diminished & has become debilitating, making ADLs difficult or impossible. AKA: prolonged grief disorder. Parent losing child at higher risk.
Complicated Grief
