Greenhouse gases and effects Flashcards
1
Q
What is the earth surrounded by?
A
A layer of gases, known as the atmosphere.
2
Q
How does the earth heat up?
A
- Light from the sun enters through the atmosphere and hits the surface of the earth.
- Some of this energy is reflected away from the earth as infa-red or heat waves.
- Some of the gases in the atmosphere are able to trap the heat, so it doesn’t escape into space, known as the greenhouse effect.
3
Q
Is the Greenhouse effect a bad thing?
A
No, without it the earth would be far too cold to maintain life, however there are too many in the atmosphere.
4
Q
Name some greenhouse gases?
A
Water vapour, carbon dioxide and methane.
5
Q
What is the increased greenhouse effect?
A
Temperatures are rising due to more heat being trapped, known as global warming.
6
Q
What causes greenhouse gases being trapped in the
atmosphere?
A
- Human activity.
- Burning vast quantities of fossil fuels e.g. oil and coal release carbon dioxide and water vapour into the atmosphere.
- Cutting down forests at a huge rate without replacing them.
- Methane:released from landfill sights and cows
- Vehicle engines.
- CFC’S : gases and aerosol cans.
