Who are the titans?
Forerunners to the Olympians, more monstrous/terrible`
Who birthed the Titans?
Uranus and Gaea
Who is Kronos/Saturn?
Head of the Titans, married to Opes/Rhea; he would eat his children so they couldn’t thwart him but Zeus tricked him into eating a rock, so then Kronos regurgitated all of his children
Who is Zeus?
Head of the Titans, god of thunder and lighting and rain, married to Hera but sleeps around like nobody’s business
Who is Hera?
Goddess of the hearth and home, married to Zeus. Often plagued with jealousy of her husbands wandering, um, eye.
What does it mean that the gods were anthropomorphic?
they could take human forms and attributes
What is Elysium?
It is a higher level of Hades, the afterlife, for the “blessed” (also now a popular new sci-fi movie)
Who is Hades/Tartarus?
god of the underworld of the same name, aka. Pluto
Who is Dionysus?
god of life, death, rebirth, also the god of the vine/wine, aka Bacchus
Who are Dionysus’s parents?
He is the son of Zeus and Semele, a mortal that Zeus wooed, Hera implanted in her mind a desire to see Zeus in full glory, this sight and the lightning killed her, so Zeus planted the child in his thigh for the rest of the gestation period, thus Dionysus was born
What were the two sides to Dionysus?
light and dark, had different followers for each side; comedy evolved from the light side, tragedy evolved from the dark side
Who is Athena?
Protectress of Athens, had a temple up top of the Acropolis, with her wings clipped so she would stay with them, goddess of wisdom
Who is Apollo?
The sun god, yo! and the god of prophecy, he rides his chariot across the sky in the morning and at night; sunrise and sunset
Who is Aphrodite?
The goddess of love, aka. Venus, beautiful goddess
Who is Hepheastus?
blacksmith, god of fire aka Vulcan
