The Orthodox Church was never prepared to give the Pope the sole right to determine the doctrines (beliefs) that Christians should hold.
• The Roman Catholic Church believed that the Pope was the successor of St Peter, the first Bishop of Rome. As such, his authority over the Church could not be questioned.
