Herbert Hoover (1928) beliefs
Optimistic with US economy with the idea of prosperity forever
Dust Bowl
Agriculture fields with out stopping farming meant sever droughts and dry climates in the 1930s. “Black Blizzards” block sun and dirt is in drifts. Farmers left so there was recovery.
Agriculture Crisis
Overproduction in WW1 made US in debt because of the decline of need after the war. The Farm Board was created to buy surplus crop
Paper Economy
Stock and national prosperity. Under-consumption, too much credit, stocks bought “on-margin” (10%less than price), bank foreclosures, unemployment, trade collapses, and republican gov does little to help.
Hoover fails
Gov shouldn’t interfere to ease depression. Direct federal relief: made a vast bureaucracy inflated the budget and urged US to pick itself up
Rugged Individualism
Success depended on individual effort and individual enterprise
Discontent with Hoover
Communists and socialists condemned capitalism. (Hunger march at the Ford Autoplant near Detroit).
