Gravimetric Analysis Flashcards
what is gravimetric analysis
an analystical technique used to determine the quantity of a substance in a water sample
how does gravimetric analysis differ from electrical conductivity
electrical conductivity tests for the total ion concentration whereas gravimetric analysis can detrmine the exact amount of a certain ion
steos in gravimetric analysis
- prepare analyte solution 2. add an excess amount of reactant to tthe water sample to react with the analyte 3. seperate and collect the precipitate from the solution 4. wash the precipitate with distilled water to remove impurities 5. filter the sample to remove water 6. dry sample until a constant mass
what are the requirements of gravimetric analysis
- the analyte/precipate is stable and does not decompose when heated 2. the reactant oonly reacts with the analyte of interest
why is gravimetric analysis beneficial
it is inexpensive and can be performed quickly and easily
applications of gravimetric analysis
analysis of water and food impurities
limitingg reactant
the reactant that is completely consumed in the reaction and is the limiting factor is how much product can be produced
excess reactant
reactant that will be left over after teh reaction is complete
