USE OF GRAPHS

Newspapers, magazines, brochures, websites, television often with a supporting picture. Graphs and charts must be self explanatory.

WHAT IS A PIE CHART

A

It represents a whole number divided into segments. Do not use if there is too many segments. Do not use a shape to difficult to divide up.

WHAT IS A BAR CHART

A

How values vary over a period of time. Use bar charts when you want to highlight individual figures rather than an overall flow. Do not use if there will be too many bars. If the overall flow of figures is more important, don’t use.

WHAT IS A LINE GRAPH

A

Shows quantities over a period of time and a gradual change. Don’t use if some quantities are small and some are huge.

WHAT IS A TABLE

A

Displays numbers or word in rows and columns. Use tables when the individual flow of figures is more important or if the numbers are very far apart in value. Use when presenting large amounts of precise information. Table is a last resort.

WHAT SHOULD AN EFFECTIVE GRAPH HAVE

A

Correct type of graph, graphically enhanced to support the audience, no vital parts missing, high standard of layout, a snappy title, a short note to make the information clear, a graphic to support the subject matter. Graph should be easy to read and create visual impact.
