WHAT IS DESKTOP PUBLISHING
The process of using a software to create publications such as magazines, newspapers, books, leaflets and posters.

DTP TECHNIQUES
Drop shadow - Makes an important feature of the graphic stand out. It creates visual impact and gives a sense of depth.
Transparency - Can help to balance tones in a layout. Can also make an object stand out more.
Reverse - Creates contrast by putting white text on a coloured/darker background.
Cropping - Cropping can remove an unwanted background, introduce curves to contrast with rectangular shapes or enhance visual impact. Square cropping or full cropping. Bleed - Partial crop of an image off a page, less formal.
FTAAP - Can create contrast with a linear layout. Adds visual impact. Can bring a page together.
Text wrap - Creates unity as it connects an image with the text and can create space in a busy layout.
TYPEFACE
Serif - HAS A FLICK. Looks traditional and formal.
Sans serif - Mainly used to advertise modern products.
Display/slab - Short and bold. Good for posters and eye catching.
Script - Imitates handwriting. Suggests formal, flowery and formal.
Novelty - Humour, fun mood or style. Appeals to younger audience.
Use no more than 3 in a publication
RGB AND CMYK
RGB - Red, green, blue. Used for on screen colours and websites.
CMYK - Cyan, magenta, yellow and key(black). Used when a layout is to be printed.
FILE TYPES
Vector graphics - They can be scaled up or down, they look like drawings opposed to real photos and the quality ranges from cartoon-like to more realistic illustrations.
BMP - (Bitmap images) Made up of pixels arranged in a grid. If you increase the side of a bitmap image, you will see blurring.
JPEG (.jpg) - Most common type of file. They can deal with millions of colours. Never copy and paste an image as it will lose quality, always import.
PNG (Portable network graphic) - Have the option of a transparent background. Useful when layering graphics.
DESIGN ELEMENTS
Colour - Can make a product stand out, can give visual impact, unify a layout, create a mood.
Shape - Visual impact, contrast, unity
Line - Used to connect/ seperate parts of a layout and create emphasis by underlining features. Can link parts on a page and create unity.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
Depth - Overlapping, drop shadow, difference in scale. Makes an object dominant.
Alignment - Can improve the structure of the layout. Can make a page easy to follow and organised.
Balance - Asymmetric balance is more eye catching as it creates contrast and both sides don’t match.
Unity - Connects everything on the page, similiar colours, repeated features, closely positioned. Easy on the eye.
Dominance - When one item stands out more than others or when an item is made more eye catching. Enlarging the focal point, contrasting, leaving white space around something.
Contrast - Difference in colours, sizes, typeface and shapes. It is eye catching and creates visual impact.
COLOUR THEORY
Primary colours - Red, blue, yellow.
Secondary colours - Green, orange, violet.
Tertiary - When primary colours are mixed with secondary colours eg yellow-orange.
Harmony - close to each other on the colour wheel, easy on the eye.
Contrast - Colours far apart or opposite, eye catching, complimentary.
Warm colours - Advancing colours appear closer to you. Sense of warmth.
Cool colours - Receding colours appear further away. Sense of cold.
Tone - How weak or strong a colour is. Tone on a flat side object means each surface has a flat tone. Tone on a curved object means it has a graded tone.
Tints and shades - Increases colour options for a designer, add black or white.
COLOUR MOODS
Red - Warm, exciting, dangerous.
Orange - Warm, cheerful, energy.
Yellow - warm, energetic, sunny, cheerful.
Green - Cool, calm, natural, healing.
Blue - Cool, wisdom, relaxing, sophisticated.
Purple - rich, luxury, mystery, wealth.
Violet - Cool, peaceful, solitary.
Neutrals (greys and browns) - Natural, restful, elegant, earthy, reliable.
Black and white - Pure, goodness, perfection, dramatic, power, mystery.
