Q

KEY STEPS IN CAD MODELLING

A

Workplaces - represent the elevation, end elevation and plan. You can also create your own workplanes.

Sketches - 2D drawing which will be turned into a 3D feature. Sketch is called a profile.

Constraints - they are used to control profiles. They fix sections to other sections or components.

Features - Types of 3D work such as extrusion, revolve and shell.

Modelling tree - Tree shows workplanes and sketches.

Components - Each part of an assembly is a component.

Assembly - combination of all components.

KEY FEATURES

A

Extrusion - pulling a 2D sketch into a 3D shape. You can’t extrude if there is unconnected or overlapping lines. Add or subtract.

Revolve - helps to produce models which are cylindrical. Revolved don’t need to go round the full 360^. Revolve around an axis.

Shell - Remove the inside material of a model to leave only wall thickness. You can also remove or delete faces.

Fillet and chamfer - modify the edges of a 3D objects. Chamfer is always at 45^.

Array - Repeat profiles/features without redrawing them. Linear array, radial array and box array.

CONSTRAINTS

A

Align - Force an object to be in line with another object.

Offset - Allows you to set a specific distance in between the two objects.

Orientation - Set a component at an angle to another component.

Mate - Joins two faces of two objects together and unable to separate.

Tangent - Will lock the round face of a cylinder to another object.

Centre axis - For a cylindrical shape to be centred with another cylindrical shape.

SIMULATION

A

Training - Flight simulators? surgery equipment and race car simulators. Used to reduce the cost of training staff.

Testing - Products can be tested on a computer prior to manufacture which can reduce production cost incase there is a fault.

Predicting - Commonly used in weather forecasting.

ILLUSTRATION

A

Films and animation - CGI means a 3D model only needs to be drawn once and then can be moved freely.

Product visualisation - Rendering a model to look realistic. Product designers use this to share ideas about their product prior to manufacture or in advertisement.

Video - Graphics in video games allow them to change shape, texture, colour or light depending on how the payer interacts.
