Graphs Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the quarters of a boxplot
A
- Median is also called the 2nd quartile
- Used for comparing
- Each line is 25%
- However, we cannot define any other percentage (ex., 85th percentile)
2
Q
Describe the skew of a boxplot and what it tells you
A
- Left skewed = mean is below the median
- Right skewed = mean is above the median
- Consider outliers as well, which pull the skew in a certain direction
3
Q
Define the following statistics:
- x-bar
- s
- Q1
- x-tilde
- Q3
- IQR
A
- x-bar = mean
- s = standard deviation
- Q1 = the median counting the numbers on the left only
- x-tilde = Q2 = median
- Q3 = the median counting the numbers on the right only
- IQR = Q3 - Q1; much less affected by outliers and skew
4
Q
What graphs can be used for any type of categorical or quantitative data?
A
Categorical:
- Bar graph
- Pie chart
Quantitative:
- Histogram
- Dotplot
- Boxplot
5
Q
What graph should be used for 2 quantitative variables?
A
- Scatterplot
6
Q
What graph should be used for 2 categorical variables?
A
- Two way table
7
Q
What graph should be used for 1 quantitative and 1 categorical variable?
A
- Stripchart
- Boxplot
8
Q
What graph should be used for 2 quantitative and 1 categorical?
A
- Scatterplot
9
Q
What graph should be used for 2 categorical 1 quantitative?
A
- Boxplot
- Stripchart
