Q

Describe the quarters of a boxplot

A
  • Median is also called the 2nd quartile
    • Used for comparing
  • Each line is 25%
    • However, we cannot define any other percentage (ex., 85th percentile)

Q

Describe the skew of a boxplot and what it tells you

A
  • Left skewed = mean is below the median
  • Right skewed = mean is above the median
  • Consider outliers as well, which pull the skew in a certain direction

Q

Define the following statistics:

  • x-bar
  • s
  • Q1
  • x-tilde
  • Q3
  • IQR
A
  • x-bar = mean
  • s = standard deviation
  • Q1 = the median counting the numbers on the left only
  • x-tilde = Q2 = median
  • Q3 = the median counting the numbers on the right only
  • IQR = Q3 - Q1; much less affected by outliers and skew
