graphene and fullerenes Flashcards
what is graphene?
a single layer of graphite
meaning it’s only ONE atom thick
how thick is graphene?
1 atom thick
properties of graphene
graphene is an excellent conductor of electricity (cuz of its delocalised electrons)
graphene is extremely STRONG(useful for new materials)
why is graphene an excellent conductor of electricity?
because it has delocalised electrons
similiarity between graphite and graphene
both good conductors of electricity
what are fullerenes?
fullerenes are molecules of carbon atoms with HOLLOW shapes
properties of fullerenes
molecules of carbon atoms with hollow shapes
have hexagonal rings of carbon atoms
can also have rings with 5 or 7 carbon atoms
what was the first fullerenes molecule to be discovered
buckminsterfullerene (C60)
what does buckminsterfullerene consist of ?
60 carbon atoms arranged in a hollow sphere, the carbon atoms form rings with either 6 carbon atoms or 5 carbon atoms
what are the uses of fullerenes
pharmaceutical delivery to the body
LUBRICANTS (e.g machines to stop moving parts from grinding together)
CATALYSTS
what are carbonanotubes?
a group of fullerenes shapes into long cylinders
rings formed of 6 carbon atoms
properties of carbon nanotubes
high tensile strength ( can be stretched without breaking)
excellent conductors of heat and electricity
what is one use of carbon nano tubes
used to reinforce materials (e.g tennis rackets)
