Graphene and fullerenes Flashcards
What is graphene?
A single layer of graphite with useful properties in electronics and composites.
What are fullerenes?
Molecules of carbon atoms with hollow shapes, based on hexagonal rings but may include rings with five or seven carbon atoms.
Give an example of a fullerene and its shape.
Buckminsterfullerene (C60), which has a spherical shape.
What are carbon nanotubes?
Cylindrical fullerenes with very high length-to-diameter ratios, useful for nanotechnology, electronics, and materials.
What skills should students develop regarding graphene, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes?
Recognizing them from diagrams and descriptions of bonding and structure, and giving examples of the uses of fullerenes, including carbon nanotubes.
