Grand Tour of Alimentary Canal Flashcards
What parasympathetic nerves are used in salivary secretion ?
Facial nerve (VII) and glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
what sympathetic control mechanisms are involved in salivary secretion ?
A1 adrenoreceptors (increase mucus content)
B2 adrenoreceptors (increase amylase content)
this causes viscous and small amounts of secretion
what effects does parasympathetic nervous system have on secretion and motility ?
increases secretion and motility (rest and digest)
what effect does sympathetic nervous system have on secretion and motility ?
decreases secretion and motility
makes saliva more viscous
what are the main branches of the abdominal aorta that supplies the GI tract ?
celiac trunk
superior mesenteric artery
inferior mesenteric artery
what veins drain the stomach ?
gastric veins
what veins drain the pancreas ?
splenic vein
what vein drains the small intestine, caecum, ascending and transverse colon ?
superior mesenteric vein
what vein drains the descending colon, sigmoid colon and rectum ?
inferior mesenteric vein
what vein does the gastric, splenic, inferior and superior mesenteric veins all drain into ?
hepatic portal- hepatic- inferior vena cava
what are the anastomoses of the portal and systemic system ?
umbilicus, gastrooesophageal, Anorectal
what are the four main layers of the alimentary canal wall ?
mucosa (epithelium, lamina propria and muscula mucosae)
submucosa
muscularis externa
adventitia/serosa
what two plexuses combine to make the enteric nervous system ?
submucosal (meissners) plexus
mesenteric in the muscularis external layer
what does the pancreas do ?
secretes enzymes needed for the digestion of fats, carbohydrates and proteins
what kind of epithelium is in the stomach, small and large intestine ?
simple columnar (to aid digestion)
