What is a phrase=
grammatical unit which may consist of 1 or more words & which is 1 of the classes of constituent into which simple sentences can be divided
Tests for ‘phrasehood’= (4)
> substitution
movement
co-ordination
question
Substitution test
can the ‘phrase’ be replaced with a single word and the sentence still makes sense grammatically; if yes=phrase
Movement test
can the ‘phrase’ be moved to another location in the sentence & still make sense; if yes=phrase
Co-ordination test
> only can be used on complete units
linking together of bits of a sentence as ‘equals’ - by and, or and but; if can=phrase
question test
Does phrase sound okaty when standing alone (as ans to a qn)
Noun phrases/ NP
phrases where the head word is a noun, pronoun or sometime just determiner
Prepositional phrases/ PP
prepositions + NPs (usually: [PP ___[NP____NP] PP]
Adjectival phrase/ AdjP
adjective (+modifiers)= AdjP
(can consist of several modifiers)
Adverbial phrase/ AdvP
adverb (+modifiers)= AdvP
(can consist of several modifiers)
verb phrase/ VP
verbs + auxiliaries= VP
