Morpheme
Smallest unit of grammar
Free morpheme
A single morpheme that can be on it’s own.
Affix/Bound Morpheme
A morpheme that has to group with other morphemes to create a word.
Phrase
Group of words centered around a headword
Headword
Central word in a phrase that identifies it, and can be modified. (noun phrase, verb phrase)
Modification
Adding additional words to provide detail about a headword by pre-modifying or post-modifying it.
Clause
Group of words centered around a verb, which are either grammatically complete (main clause) or not complete (subordinate clause).
Active Voice
Subject of the clause is the one to perform the action.
Passive Voice
Clause where the one effected by the action is the subject of the clause.
Tense
How the time of the event is indicated (past, present, future).
Aspect
An additional element of time, indicates if the subject is still doing the action, or if they action is finished.
Sentence
Large phrase that can include a single clause (simple sentence) or multiple (compound or complex sentence).
Sentence Function
Stating the purpose of a sentence (imperative, interrogative, declarative, and exclamatory).
Word class
The category a word is placed into such as nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, determiners, pronouns, preposition, conjunction.
